Compromise reached between HM and UIDAI
  • New Delhi, Jan 27 (IBNS):  A compromise was reached between the Home Ministry and the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIADI)  over the Unique Identification Number (UID) project on Thursday, Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Friday.

"Mandate for UID project extended by 40 crore," Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said while addressing a joint briefing with UIADI chairman Nandan Nilekani.

Nilakani said that a compromise has been reached over the UIAID project row.

Chidambaram said that there will be no duplication of work between the UIDAI and the National Population Register (NPR).

The Home Ministry collects the NPR.

Chidambaram said,"There will be no duplication of biometry data."

Troubles had erupted between the two departments when both the Home Ministry and the UIDAI were authorised to collect biometric data for the UIDs.

Chidambaram on Friday clarified that the biometric data will be collected by only one authority.

He also said that the UID project reported progress in several states.
